Conservation Volunteer Stories, Thailand

Conservation in Thailand - Jane Thompson
Having left England on 26th February and flown just over 6000 miles I arrived at Krabi airport, very tired, very hot, jetlagged and nervous about the next six months. I was immediately made to feel very welcome and spent the journey back to the house taking in the countryside of this new and very different country..

I think just being in Thailand made me smile, but working among some great volunteers and some amazing staff members like Goa with his crazy stories, great jokes and him just being him, we got on so well and he really helped me through some bad times. Morn was also there with his awesome karaoke style singing all the time, always a smile on his face and some great conversations. I think this project taught me a lot about myself and how I want to live my life, also I know some pretty awesome facts and gained a great understanding about marine animals and how to distinguish fish families (sweetlips and snappers) - private joke...

Thailand was an incredible place in its own right, but for me what made the experience, was volunteering abroad to help the locals, living with a kind family and such fun volunteers. A lot of work always seems to get done..but at the same time a good night out is never missed out in the schedule!

The trip though as a whole was great. The diving was soooooo good. The visibility was about 30 metres and given I was now an advanced diver I could dive to 30 metres whereas before we were restricted to 18. I shared a cabin with Harriet for the four days and we had such a giggle all the time with all the others, even when we were under the water. Not only was the water so clear, the corals were even brighter than here locally. I saw so many different types of fish which I could recognise under the water myself. On the first dive I saw an octopus.

Originally I applied to PA as I wanted to take a career break. I have always wanted to come to Thailand and the prospect to getting involved in conservation work and combining that with diving was very exciting.
